Taking Your Dog to France via Eurotunnel (LeShuttle)

A complete step-by-step guide for UK pet owners traveling post-Brexit. Rabies rules, microchip order, 10-day signing window, and return tapeworm requirements.

Traveling to France with your pet via Eurotunnel LeShuttle (Folkestone to Calais) is one of the most popular and convenient routes for UK pet owners. However, post-Brexit EU regulations require strict adherence to veterinary documentation rules. UK-issued pet passports are no longer valid for travel into the EU.

1 Microchip Implantation (Strict Sequence)

According to GOV.UK rules, your dog, cat, or ferret must be microchipped before or on the exact same day as their rabies vaccination. If the rabies vaccine is given prior to microchipping, the vaccination is deemed legally invalid for travel and must be repeated.

2 Rabies Vaccination & The 21-Day Rule

Pets must be at least 12 weeks old before receiving a rabies vaccine. For a primary vaccination (or if previous cover has lapsed), you must wait a strict 21 full days before traveling to France. Day 1 starts the day AFTER the vaccine is given.

Booster Exception: If your pet receives a rabies booster on or before the expiry date of a previous valid vaccine, there is no 21-day wait required.

3 Obtaining the Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

An Official Veterinarian (OV) must issue an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). Key validity parameters specified by GOV.UK include:

  • 10-Day Entry Window: Must be signed by an OV within 10 days of your entry into France/EU.
  • 4 Months / 6 Months EU Travel: Valid for 6 months of ongoing travel within the EU from the issue date.
  • Re-entry to GB: Valid for 6 months for returning to Great Britain.
  • Max Pets: Valid for up to 5 pets belonging to the same owner (non-commercial travel).

4 Tapeworm Treatment Requirements

A. Entering France:

Dogs traveling directly from Great Britain to France do NOT require a tapeworm treatment prior to entry. (Tapeworm treatment before outbound entry is only required for Ireland, Northern Ireland, Finland, Malta, and Norway).

B. Returning to Great Britain:

ALL dogs entering Great Britain from France must receive an approved tapeworm treatment (containing Praziquantel) administered by an EU vet.

Strict Return Window: Treatment must be given no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before your scheduled entry time back into Great Britain.
